To format your writing according to the Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition, follow these key guidelines:

General Formatting

  • Double-space the entire text, including block quotes and notes
  • Use 1-inch margins on all sides
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph by 0.5 inches
  • Number all pages consecutively in the top right corner, starting with the title page

Title Page

  • Center the title about one-third of the way down the page
  • Place your name a few lines below the title
  • Include course information, date, and other details at the bottom of the page

Main Text

  • Begin the main text on a new page after the title page
  • Use footnotes for citations rather than endnotes
  • Place footnote numbers at the end of the clause or sentence, after any punctuation

Footnotes and Bibliography

  • Use superscript numbers in the text to indicate footnotes
  • Place footnotes at the bottom of the page, separated by a short line
  • Include a bibliography at the end of the paper, listing all sources cited
  • Format footnotes and bibliography entries differently:
    • Footnote: First Name Last Name, Title of Book (Place of Publication: Publisher, Year), Page Number.
    • Bibliography: Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year.

Block Quotes

  • For quotes longer than 100 words or 5-6 lines:
    • Indent the entire quote 0.5 inches from the left margin
    • Do not use quotation marks
    • Single-space the quote
    • Include the citation in a footnote after the final punctuation

Headings

  • Use up to three levels of headings
  • Format first-level headings in bold, centered, with headline-style capitalization
  • Format second-level headings in italic, centered, with headline-style capitalization
  • Format third-level headings in roman type, left-aligned, with sentence-style capitalization

  • Provide a caption below each figure, including:
    • Figure number
    • Brief description
    • Source information (if applicable)
  • In-text references: Refer to figures by their numbers (e.g., "see fig. 1")

    • Year of creation
    • Medium
    • Source of the image
