International Students @ IADT Library: Language

Changing language options

Most of our searches and databases let you change the language of the website interface. This means that the menus and buttons will appear in the language you choose. However, the text you are reading will stay in English unless it was originally written in another language.

You can also filter results to find texts written in a specific language. Look at the boxes below for more details.

General Library search

You can change both the interface language and the language of the texts you find through the Library search.

When you are doing a general search across everything the Library owns, you use the white search bar on the Library homepage https://library.iadt.ie/ Then you can filter the results to show up in the language you choose.

You type your search in to the search bar here ↓

Then you click 'advanced search' ↓

Then scroll down and you will see an option to change the results to show only texts written in the language you choose. This doesn't change the language of the search website interface, it shows you texts originally written in the language you chose.

To change the language of the interface in the Library search results screen:

On the top right of the screen, click 'MyEBSCO', and then click ' My Preferences' ↓

Then you can change the language of the interface. You will still need to advance search using the language filter to get texts written in the language you choose.

Artificial Intelligence

What is ChatGPT? | ChatGPT Overview

As an international student, you might be more at risk when using AI tools for your research. This is because academic standards and expectations may be different from what you're used to, and it can be harder to recognise the risks that come with relying on AI.

Language barriers might also lead you to use AI for help with writing or translating, which could cause accidental plagiarism or issues with citing sources correctly.

You might also feel pressure to keep up with your coursework and complete it quickly. AI might seem like an easy way to help, but if you don’t check the information carefully or give credit to the sources, you could run into problems. Understanding these risks will help you use AI correctly and avoid any issues.

This article highlights the ways Artificial Intelligence could harm your academic career if not used responsibly: 4 ways AI will betray international students – and how to protect yourself

We have guides which ego in to more detail about these topics:

  1. Artificial Intelligence
  2. Academic Integrity + Plagiarism
  3. Referencing

eBooks

You can change both the interface language and the language of the texts you find directly on the eBooks website.

To change the interface language:

Firstly, don’t search the Library website - go directly to the eBooks website. You can do this by going to the Library website, then clicking Our Collections on the top menu ↓

You can then change the interface language to your preference ↓

Please be aware that changing the interface language does not change the language of the books. You will need to do a search and then filter by language in order to read books in your chosen language. Information on how to do this is below

To read eBooks in your chosen language, first do a search on the eBooks website ↓

Then, using the 'Refine your results' filtering tools, select the language you want to read texts in. Note that this will filter out books in English, so if your lecturer has requested you read a certain book, you may need to read it in English screenshot

Print books

When searching our print catalogue exclusively, you can search by language the text is written in, but unfortunately you cannot change the interface language.

To bring up book results that are in the language you choose, firstly don’t search the Library website - go directly to the print catalogue You can do this by going to the Library website, then clicking Our Collections on the top menu ↓

Then click 'Print Collections' and 'Search the print collection' ↓
