  1. The first step that you should take when using AI for information seeking is to familiarise yourself with IADT's Academic Integrity Policy.

  2. Don't forget to check your lecturer's position on AI. Some lecturers permit the use of AI and others don't. Ensure that you know exactly what your lecturer permits and doesn't.

Tips for the Ethical Use of AI in Academic Work

It is important to uphold the following principles when searching and applying information in your academic work:

1. Be Transparent About AI Use

Always let your lecturer know when you've used AI tools to assist with your assignments. Further information on how to cite AI is available here. Never submit AI-generated content as your own original work. These practices are crucial for maintaining honesty and academic integrity.

2. Use AI to Enhance Learning, Not Replace It

Think of AI as a supportive resource rather than a shortcut. Instead of relying on it to write entire essays or complete assignments, use it for brainstorming ideas, troubleshooting, or improving your writing. Focus on developing your own skills and understanding of the subject matter.

3. Provide Evidence of AI Use

If you incorporate any AI-generated content, whether text, images, or data, make sure to cite the AI tool appropriately. See the Citing AI tab of this guide above, or click here. Include relevant prompts and outputs in an appendix to demonstrate how you utilised AI in your assignment. 

4. Talk to Your Lecturer

If you're unsure about how to use AI for a specific assignment, don’t hesitate to reach out to your lecturer for further information. They can offer guidance on acceptable use in the context of your programme of study. Open communication is key to ensuring you're on the right track. 

5. Avoid Relying on AI for Core Work

While AI can be a valuable tool, relying on it too heavily may hinder your learning. Ensure that you engage in essential tasks like researching, analysing, and synthesising information to build your own understanding. Use AI to enhance your research skills, not replace them. By following these guidelines, you can effectively harness the benefits of AI while upholding the principles of academic integrity. The goal is to use AI responsibly to support your educational journey, ensuring that you accurately represent your own work and contributions.
