Library Resources for Doctoral and Masters by Research Students: Library Collections

Library Collections

IADT Library Collections

The Library provides access to a wide range of scholarly materials, including print and online eBooks, online journals, and databases, accessible on and off-campus. IADT Library's membership of the IReL Consortium further enhances access to premier academic content. A comprehensive of print and online collections including a detailed list of scholarly databases is available here. See also the Library's 101 Guide for information on how to search these resources. It is possible to request new book titles for the Library collection here. Where possible, books can also be borrowed from another library on inter-library loan by completing this form here.

Open Access Collections

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) are vital platforms for open access, increasing the visibility, accessibility, and impact of scholarly research. The DOAJ indexes a diverse range of peer reviewed open access journals, while DOAB focuses on peer reviewed open access books.

Primary vs. Secondary Sources

Research benefits from the use of both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources offer first-hand evidence and raw information, while secondary sources interpret, analyse, or summarise primary sources. Using primary sources allows researchers to make new discoveries and provide credible evidence. Secondary sources offer context, analysis, and interpretation, which helps frame and interpret primary source materials and strengthen the credibility of research. Examples of primary sources include diaries, original documents, interviews, speeches, government documents, statistical data, research reports, creative artworks, and newspaper articles. Secondary sources include journal articles.

Several databases at IADT Library such as JSTOR and Bloomsbury Visual incorporate valuable primary sources such as images. If you have any queries in relation to sourcing primary as well as secondary information please don't hesitate to ask a member of library staff for information (see Library Expertise tab of this guide).
